With the summer in full swing, August 2018 events on Tenerife are mainly focused on providing lots of outdoor fun, with a huge music/dance festival happening nearly every weekend and sports meets and religious fiestas across the island.
Music / Dance / Parties
The first weekend of August 2018 brings three big events, all on the 4th: Minimal Summer 2018 is happening in Costa Adeje — 13 hours of open air music and other fun including swimming pools and climbing walls; there’s another Lagoon Party at the Hard Rock Hotel in Adeje, while just up the coast Güimar is hosting its Summer Fest, featuring food trucks and beer on the beach, along with music from the 80s and 90s.
The following week you can catch more 80s music at the Buho Club in La Laguna on Aug. 10. On Aug. 11, the Sunblast festival will be taking place in Costa Adeje, while on Sunday the 12th you can catch Diva’s Diary at Pirámide de Arona, a 75-min performance combining cabaret with acrobatics — or as the slogan says, Burlesque meets Moulin Rouge.
Spanish heavy metal band OBUS is taking the stage in Puerto de la Cruz on Aug. 17, while the city will be hosting its popular indie Phe festival on Aug 24-25. Another must-see event is the A Todo Color fesitval in La Orotava, also on Aug. 25 — which entails 11 hours of music, workshops, DJ competitions, dance performances and other fun such as throwing coloured powder.
Closing the month are Bavarian Week and the 2018 Oktoberfest, which start on the 27th and last until Sept. 2, also in Puerto de la Cruz.
And if you happen to be in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on a Thursday and are in the mood for some live music, stop by the Los Lavadores art gallery.
August 2018 on Tenerife has no shortage of sports events either, with a variety of meets spread out throughout the month:
Aug. 4 is the date of the San Bartolomé de Tejina Cross Country Race, one of the many events planned in Tejina to celebrate the town’s patron saint. The event will include race walking and wheelchair racing, too. The 7th event of the Tenerife Golf Circuit takes place on the same day at Buenavista Golf.
On Aug. 5-12, surfing mecca El Médano will be hosting the PWA Windsurf Wold Cup, which will be overlapping with Anaga’s North-East Ultra Trail Run (Aug 9-11), a 74-km race across Tenerife’s scenic northeastern mountains. The weekend of Aug. 11 also brings the Alcalá Swim, a race featuring two distances: 1500 m for adults and 200 m for children.
The Tenerife Golf Circuit ends this month with its 8th event at Golf Costa Adeje on Aug. 18, while Tejina comes full circle and also closes the month’s sports activities with the Aug. 25 Tejina Bestialon, a competition combining swimming, running, cycling and athletics.
Fiestas & Family-Friendly Events
In addition to sports meets, the main family-friendly events this month are religious fiestas, and there’s quite a few:
Aug. 2: Our Lady of Los Angeles in El Sauzal,
Aug. 5: La Esperanza Country Fair,
Aug. 10-15: Candelaria Fiestas, a series of fiestas, fairs and sports events in Arguayo (Santiago del Teide),
Aug. 11: La Guancha celebrates in roots and traditions with its Descent of the Beeches,
Aug. 14-15: Candelaria will be celebrating its patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria,
Aug. 16: the Garachico County Fair,
Aug. 26: Tejina celebrates St Bartholomew’s Day with its Tejina Hearts fiesta.
Lastly, there are few strictly gastronomical events scheduled for this August on Tenerife, but it bears mentioning that any of the many fiestas and fairs always entail large quantities of excellent local food. Three additional events any foodie might enjoy are:
Aug. 11: the Olive Oil Tasting Workshop at Casa del Vino
Aug 12: the Vintage Market Day in La Laguna, and
Aug 25: the Cheese Tasting Workshop, again at Casa del Vino.
