March 2018 is upon us and the events scene in Tenerife is as lively as ever. Not only is the carnival season far from over, but there’s a host of festivals, sports events and music performances to boot taking place throughout the month. Highlights include the Carnival of Los Cristianos, the Punta Brava Circus Festival and celebrations of Semana Santa – the lot of which promises great fun for all ages – as well as shows by Al Anderson and Jorge Drexler, and the annual Cadena Dial Music Awards. Read on for a detailed list of what March has in store for you.
March 2018 Feistas and Festivals
The series of Tenerife carnivals continues with the Carnival of Los Cristianos (March 1-12), a pirate-themed affair that opens with the election of carnival queens on March 1st. On March 3, El Rosario will be hosting its own mini carnival: dedicated to diversity, the show will include music and dance performances, and no entrance fees.
Another fun event for people of all ages is the upcoming Alios International Circus Festival in Punta Brava (March 14-18). Tickets are available online through the website, but there will be one free performance by Sinakt Circo TeatroDanza on March 15. Families with kids might also like the Chiki Circus show (March 17, 24 and 31) and the Disney Music Concert on March 4, both in Santa Cruz.
Last but not least on the festival/fiesta list are celebrations of the Holy Week or Semana Santa. Starting on March 23 and leading up to Easter, these will include church processions throughout Tenerife’s towns and cities – the biggest taking place in La Laguna and Santa Cruz all week long. Also marking the holiday is Guía de Isora’s Easter Flower Festival (March 29 – April 1) and Adeje’s reenactment of the Passion of Christ on March 30.
Tenerife Foodie Events
While every fiesta and festival on the island includes opportunities for good local eats, some Tenerife events specifically celebrate traditional food and drink.
A wonderful example of the latter is the Canarias Folk Festival in Los Cristianos. Known for its great folk music and stalls with local delicacies, the popular event closes this month with only two more dates left: March 15 and 22.
Another foodie favourite is the Night of Wine and Tapas (Guía de Isora, March 17), along with La Laguna’s monthly Vintage Market Day (March 11), where you can find everything from vintage clothing to gourmet foods. And if you’re in town March 16-18, be sure to visit Tegueste’s Canarian Tuna Festival, which promotes local wines and cheese as well.
Tenerife Sports Events
Several sports competitions are happening on the island this March.
First up is the 1×2 Bike Race in El Sauzal. The mountain bike competitions includes two courses – 30 km and 58 km – and takes place on March 4.
Not long after, El Sauzal will also be hosting the Carrera por la Mujer y Marcha Solidaria (March 18), a charity event in support of the Sor Marce community pantry in Tacoronte.
Music Events in March 2018
As far as music performances are concerned, March is continuing February’s busy trend with a wide variety of shows.
On the popular side, March 10 will see The Original Wailers and Al Anderson performing in Santa Cruz, while Twenty 4 Seven will be entertaining audiences down the coast in Adeje, as part of the Children of the 80’s Festival.
Next are the annual Cadena Dial Music Awards, which will be hosted in Santa Cruz on March 15, followed by Uruguayan artist Jorge Drexler promoting his new album in the capital on March 16. On March 17, the girl-band Sweet California is coming to La Laguna, while Santa Cruz will be hosting DJ Roger Sánchez.
